We arrived just as they were unlocking the doors at the de la Cruz collection in Miami.
As soon as we entered the quiet building, a staff member greeted us warmly and welcomed questions. We love questions. Without missing a beat, my 5 year asks his first question. “Is there any art we can touch?” Yes, there is only one. It’s a pile of candy by Felix Gonzalez Torres and it’s on the third floor. He asked “are we there yet?” a million times while we were on the first and second floors. But when he figured out where the stairs were to the 3rd floor, he set off with mission. You could hear his determined footsteps echo through the galleries.
Lines Between is a journey to understanding the urgency of experiencing art together. So the kids and I asked a million questions of the gallery attendant as we navigated three floors of this cohesive collection. He even showed us the artwork in the library that we spied from the first floor.
There is a lot to see at the de la Cruz, so it’s a great time to remind you that you don’t have to look at everything. We found a few favorites, like art by Laura Owens, the collaboration between Wade Guyton &Kelley Welker, and Aaron Curry. We stayed with these for a while and spent less time with others.
