We love going to art parks! Not only is it harder to break the art, but we get to be outside! It’s like hiking, but expecting to see the unexpected. At Sculpturepark Cologne, our little ones ran ahead of us and straight for the helicopter, the giant hole, and the treasure boxes in the trees. KölnSkulptur rotates contemporary sculptures here every two years and the current exhibition, “La Fin de Babylone. I am surprised that I am so happy!” will close this summer. I’m looking forward to what is next.
There are over 45 artists represented in the garden, but it is small enough to explore without exhausting our children. Our favorites included Tom Burr, Dan Graham, Bethan Huws, and Mauro Staccioli. There are also big names like Kapoor, Holtzer, and Fischli/Weiss. Jan Kiefer’s crosses hanging in trees got most of our attention! Discreetly strapped to tree trunks are a few aluminum crosses. It is not obvious, but there is a latch that will open the front of the cross. I didn’t expect what was placed inside the crosses. It tasted delicious, and I laughed. I think I should let you discover it on your own. Hidden crosses, hidden doors, hidden treasure… all for figuring out how to relate to public space. Or is there more meaning to the object and ritual inside?
