I picked up a few books from Dia Beacon on the trip I talk about here. One of my favorites is “Sky High” by Germano Zullo and illustrated by Albertine. You know the end is near when the warthog eats your takeout pizza before you can get to the door to retrieve it. It is a beautiful story about Agenor-Agobar Poirier des Chapelles’ and Willigis Kittycly Junior’s race to build the tallest house. The illustrations are the story. Labeling every newly hired “highest paid architects in the world” and drawing each owner’s schemes to deter the other. The cranes and pulleys balance the owner’s pursuit of style, luxury, and innovation. An army of staff, experts, and artists work until it is “completely impossible to build any higher.” Sky High is a moral tale about building beautiful places. There is a fine line between greatness and losing your pizza. No kid wants to lose their pizza. This book stays in my part of our library, but my children will often request it.
